How to Read Literature from a Comparative Media Perspective (Prof'in. Dr. Schäfer)

In this course we will approach the study of American literature from a comparative media perspective. We will read poems and fictional texts that address, imitate, or rework the representational strategies of painting, photography, film, and digital media. And we will examine visual and digital media that adapt and remediate literary works. This intermedial approach will help us recognize that literary practices develop in exchange with other media and allow us to situate literary texts (in their media-specific formats and materialities) in media culture.
