Shakespeare's great tragedy Hamlet is probably one of the most popular texts in world literature. It is safe to say that many readers are familiar with the melancholy Danish prince - even if they have not read the play. The tragedy is notoriously difficult, if not boring. It is, after all, Shakespeare's longest play.

In this seminar we will approach this notorious play and explore its enduring fascination. Among other things, we will work on structure and content through close reading. We will also place the play in the literary and theatrical context of the early modern period. This will include a discussion of the motif of revenge.
