One of the most challenging situations in West European politics is the growing strength of "radical"/"extreme"/"populist" right-wing parties, provoking (mostly) futile attempts by conservative mainstream parties to win back some of their lost electorate. Collaboration among these parties within Europe brings potential conflicts to supranational governing bodies, such as the European parliament, potentially opening doors for democratic backsliding not just in a nation-state, but also in Europe as a whole.

In this seminar we will read contemporary (=not older than 5 years) studies on several topics related to right-wing populist parties. Together, we will discuss all aspects of the literature: Is the theoretical framework convincing? Are the methods used appropriate? Are results presented well and what do we make of them?
