Course aim and content:

The aim of this course is to improve students’ ability to write the academic essay which was introduced in Integrated Language Skills I.  The focus is on form.  In this way, Writing Skills I is a follow-up to ILS I with the difference that a significantly higher level of work with the academic essay is expected.  To this end, the reader will provide information and exercises dealing with the academic essay.  Essentially, an integral part of the students’ responsibility is to be able to assimilate, to be conversant with, and to implement the substance of the reader in the work they hand in.  In this sense, the course requires an autodidactic approach from its participants.  In addition to the reader, students will work with supplementary exercises, which will be distributed via e-mail and/or posted on Moodle.  Also disseminated in this fashion will be the dramatic literature (one-act and full-length plays) upon which the essay topics will be based.
