Black Americans have long struggled for their freedom and continue to do so today. Today we see their engagement in modern social movements such as #BlackLivesMatter and the Movement for Black Lives. But where lie the roots of this activism?

This class focuses on the development of the Black Power movement from its early antecedents at the beginning of the 20th century through the height of its engagement with community organization, politics, and law enforcement. Finally, we will have a look at Black Power’s Legacy across American culture, activism, and politics. Students are expected to prepare weekly readings on scholarship based on the development of Black Power in the context of the U.S. and analyze various primary sources on the topic at hand throughout the semester. In order to receive full credit for the class, students are expected to develop a research project, present their findings in class, and finalize a research paper/take home-exam.
