In the late eighteenth century, ancient Greece became en vogue. Travellers, artists and archeologists went to Greece and tried to uncover its classical past. Writers became interested in Greek poetry, drama, and mythology. A veritable cult of Greece shaped English Romantic literature, notably the works of Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Keats.
In this Master Seminar we will study romantic poetry in the context of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Hellenism, i.e. in the light of the emerging academic disciplines of historical linguistics and ancient history, archeological discoveries, travel writing as well as the Philhellenic movement that supported Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire.
