Gender plays a substantial role in shaping the lives of men and women. In this seminar, we will study theoretical perspectives on gender as well as specific concepts such as gender display, hegemonic masculinity, emphasized femininity, and non-binary identities. We will then use these concepts to understand various gendered aspects of society, including gender in the family, violence and crime, gender in the media, and sexuality. Overall, the aim of the seminar is to explore the social construction of gender and how this influences the organization of society and the everyday lives of men, women, and children. The seminar experience will include group work, class discussions, and elements of a flipped-classroom approach, so please come prepared to do the readings regularly and ahead of time, and to participate in class.
