In this seminar we will look at current research into the semantics of sign languages. Of particular interest will be the role of iconicity and arbitrariness in sign languages, how signing space is used for semantic and pragmatic purposes and information structure in sign languages. Potential topics for discussion include the development from iconicity to arbitrariness in young sign languages such as Nicaraguan Sign Languages, the role of gestures and iconic enrichments in sign languages, how shifting perspectives is achieved through varying uses of the signing space and how topic and focus are expressed. Additionally, the seminar will not only focus on sign languages, but will also compare features of sign languages semantics to those in spoken language and in doing so explore what the semantics of sign languages can teach us about semantics across all modalities.
