Lucy Neville. “Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys.” Chapter 9.
- The book deals with women's fascination for m/m sexually explicit media (SEM).
- For this, Neville talks with women in interviews, not just about them.
- SEM is depicted as revolutionary, liberating, and feminist.
- The fetishisation of gay men is not problematised.
- Problems of fetishisation etc. are happening within the prevalent patriarchal structures. So how liberating can this consumption of porn really be?
- The chapter is missing critical reading and discussion of actual texts: there is so much more than just 50 Shades of Grey.
Drarry fanfic
- popular fanfic trope: they hate each other because they can't admit that they like each other
- Sex acts as a catalyst for their contradictory feelings.
- There is always a power imbalance between the two, though the person in power changes.
Porn in fanfiction
- might be used for character development or character study in contrast to mainstream porn
- The depiction of violence and its romanticising are especially prevalent in m/m dynamics (see also masculinity & violence in our session on rape culture).
