The course will take place online.

The work of (colonial) Empire has often been touted as primarily political and economic. In spite of the adventures, risks, and thrill-seeking ventures of the colonial administrators who took refuge in cricket, Polo, European music, dances and art, language and aesthetics were also used as weapons of soft imperialism in the colonies from Congo to India, and from Burma to Canada. This course aims to explore the interconnections between the uses of literature, aesthetic experiences in the process of Empire-building and colonial social engineering, with a primary on Anglophone world.  

Objectives: Students will gain a seminal understanding of intersections of the aesthetics and politics of imperialism. They will also gain insights into the vernacular aesthetic traditions emerging from the hybrid colonial encounter.
