This class seeks to shed light on the development of the Gay Rights movement in the U.S. during the early mid 21st century, the obstacles it faced from within as well as without, and offer various perspectives by different activists and organizations fighting for the interests of the LGBTQ+ community. Students are expected to read, analyze, and discuss academic scholarship on the movement’s history and social movement theory, and primary sources in the form of newspaper articles, statements, interviews, speeches, etc.
