• 17.12.2024 - Porn Studies: Women and m/m slash fiction and its immanent potential for change

First things first, the fanfiction I attached IS porn. Please mind the tags and if you’re uncomfortable with reading that type of content, you can still safely consume the fic until “From something sweeter, something that he refused to acknowledge” (p. 5). I chose a #Drarry fic, which refers to the second most famous pairing in the Harry Potter Fandom–Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter–superseded only by Hermione and and Draco (a.k.a. #Dramione).
You don’t need extensive knowledge of the Fandom to understand the stakes of this pairing: Pinned against each other since childhood, the two wizards somewhat experience Hogwarts from opposite ends and while Draco joins the Deatheaters, Harry ultimately wins the war and saves Draco from fire (on his broom, on which they both escape, pressed tightly against one another…).
I could have chosen any other m/m slash fic (i.e. fics that explore character pairings, here: between men), but I particularly like their dynamics, as there is a variety of interpretation within the community in terms of gender norm ideas (“which one of them is “the man”?).

Lucy Neville is a Criminology Lecturer in Leicester, UK who specifies in domestic abuse. She is also interested in Porn Studies and conducted an extensive, anonymous online survey of female slash readers, trying to find an answer to the question, why many women enjoy m/m porn, with a focus on fanfiction, resp. m/m slash fiction.
Attached here you find the final chapter of her book “Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys” (2018), where she focuses most on the political potential within the phenomenon, as well as two of the introductory paragraphs.

Final notes: SEM (Sexual Explicit Media), BL (Boy’s Love Manga)
