The reading “Avantgarde and Kitsch“ by Clement Greenberg discusses the contrast between two strands of art, distinguished as Avantgarde and Kitsch. The author portrays Avantgarde as a high form of art and intellectually challenging, whereas Kitsch serves consumerism, lacking depth and originality by always remaining the same. One might agree with Greenberg by appreciating Avantgarde‘s challenge to look deeply into the intentions of art, however, one can also disagree by respecting Kitsch‘s accessibility to different sorts of individuals, especially in a world where people rather spend their time on social media than with literature. Overall, I think that both, Avantgarde and Kitsch, should not only be looked at individually, but also how both can be intertwined.
