In his text Greenberg compares two different cultures and how they influence society and art. He starts off by introducing the Avant-Garde culture, which was a cultural movement that helped poets, philosophers and other artists to critique and confront past/present societies.
With the alphabetisation of most people, the avant-Garde culture was not a gate-kept topic that only academic humans would show interest in. Thus Kitsch was created, which became a more popular and more widespread culture. Kitsch describes time magazines, TV shows and other stuff… , nonetheless Greenberg argues that Kitsch is a form of the avant-Garde culture or better said a descendant.
I enjoyed reading the text and how Greenberg compared both cultures and how they influence each other, but also how they influenced our society/art. However I did not understand his comparison of Picasso and the Russian artist.
