Another straight banger documentary made by John Pilger, whose documentary on the involvement of the West in the occupation of East Timor we've watched last semester and which certainly pushes the boundaries when it comes to good and objective journalism. This one, "The War on Democracy", shows how the United States foreign policy functions in Latin America. Color revolutions, staged coups, terrorism, and endless propaganda are instrumental in this. For example, there is a part where, during the US backed coup attempt against Hugo Chavez, the shooting of the opposition is supposedly perpatrated by Chavez supporters, but another angle reveals that that couldn't have been possible. We've got archival footage of Nixon praising Mont Rioss, former president of Guatemala, who is credited with killing thousands of Guatemalan citizens with the aid of the US. All that can perhaps look like some conspiracy theory to someone who has not seen with their own eyes how the US foreign policy works, and Pilger has recieved a fair share of criticism, especially by the American far-right, yet he chose to direct these documentaries until the end of his life.
