In his essay, Sell emphasizes how the avant-garde cannot and should not have a set definition as it goes against the very purpose of avant-garde. The avant-garde is dynamic and evolving, it is not bound to to one certain place, time or movement unlike other artistic movement. Like Sell, I think the avant-garde can stay relevant throughout time instead of being left in a certain period/epoch but as Sell mentions, the audience of the avant-garde should be reevaluated. It should be more accessible and cater to those that it was intended for.
Similarly, Sers talks about the decline of the avant-garde in terms of its political power and radical stance. The original purpose of the avant-garde -to be radical and revolutionary- has changed as the avant-gard continues to become more institutionalized as time passes. The decline of the radical avant-garde can be compared to the surge of the contemporary avant-garde, as he says and I must agree that the avant-garde as of right now mainly follows a different purpose, a purpose that is more focused on the aesthetics of it.
