The text explores the use of dogs in Zimbabwean literature from the time of the Rhodesian Bush War in 1975 to 2015, analyzing their symbolic and allegorical roles across different political/historical periods. It becomes clear that dogs in Zimbabwean literature act as both passive metaphors and active agents, either positive or negative. This enables writers, of which some examples are given, to expose political, social, and economic issues through symbolism. This text was fascinating to me, as we’ve already learned about animal symbolism in the context of populism, like goats and tigers, that are less likely to appear in a Europe-centric canon. Now we’ve gotten to know the symbol of the dog, which exists in many spoken and written languages in various forms but takes on a very special role in Zimbabwean literature. Maybe comparing these portrayals to other literary works from different countries might prove interesting?
