The aim of Writing Skills I is to provide students with the skills necessary to write an academic essay in English at the university level. More precisely, this will entail being able to write a thesis-oriented, academic paper with an interpretive and analytic funnel introduction, leading to a clear and explicit thesis with extensions linking to topic sentences in the main body of the essay. Each main body paragraph must show clear, sequential, and logical development with plausible and accurate use of citation according to the MLA style. The end paragraph also needs to show considered academic sophistication. The course will also focus on advanced paragraph development, incorporation of secondary and tertiary sources for academic readership, cohesion and coherence in writing style, and refinement of grammar and syntax at a C1+ level. Topics for these essays will be taken from short stories or from dramatic literature.

This course requires the WSI Reader, which is available at Script und Kopie. This course is live (face-to-face), with course materials, information, and submission folders provided here on Moodle.
