The two texts "Resisting the Question, 'What is Avant-Garde'" by Mike Sell and "The Radical Avant-Garde and the Contempory Avant-Garde" by Philippe Sers explore the concept of avant-garde by examining its definitions and background. Sell argues that it is complex to define avant-garde, one has to look at the context and marginalizing structures prominent during the time. Whereas Sers highlights how the early avant-garde shifts to the contemporary one, with the first one seeking for a deeper exploration of art and meaning and the latter being merely commercial becoming a product of consumption. One could agree that both authors call on valid concerns, whereas the early avant-garde may engage in more meaning, but still is not as perfect as it seems.
